Today marks the 52nd anniversary of Sam Rayburn's death. He was the longest serving Speaker of the House in U.S. history. He was also speaker of the Texas House of Representatives from 1911-1912 (32nd Lege). He served with Lyndon Johnson’s father in the Texas House and became Johnson’s mentor when Johnson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.
