Remembering Gore Vidal: A dying breed

With the passing of the Gore Vidal, the Economist looks back at the role of the public intellectual in American politics and how many of our public intellectuals have passed from the scene, being replaced by conflict as entertainment as opposed to intelligent discourse. They refer back to the exchange above between Vidal and William Buckley, which is entertaining precisely because it was unusual, although now it would be par for the course.
