Last night, I watched Bernie, starring Jack Black, Matthew McConauhey and Shirley McClaine. It’s based on a true story which happened in Carthage, TX - about 30 miles down State Hwy 315 from my hometown - when Bernie Tiede shot Marjorie Nugent and then hid her body in the freezer. I’ve been wanting to watch this since I first heard about it, and it did not disappoint. The movie was great, and humorous, despite the subject matter, because it captured how people in Carthage really felt: they loved Bernie.
Before watching the movie, I recommend reading Texas Monthly’s article Midnight in the Garden of East Texas.
