I saw this poll posted a forum the other day, and I scratched my head a little when I saw it. I pretty much take any thing from World Net Daily with large doses of salt, because - well, I don’t think I really have to explain that do I?
The poll was conducted by Wenzel Strategies, who did not post any information about the poll on their website unfortunately.
The last head-to-head poll I’ve seen that had the crosstabs available was Public Policy Polling. This is from January 13-16 [pdf], so it’s a little dated; however, it shows between 5-7 percent of Republicans voting for Obama, as opposed to the 20 percent in Wenzel Strategies’ poll. Perhaps a large swing could have happened in the last month, but I lean toward this being more the result of Wenzel Strategies reputation as a not so accurate polling firm.
What makes the numbers mentioned in the article somewhat suspect is that both Paul and Romney are only down single digits despite losing one-fifth of their base and losing independents. Not quite sure how you can be within single digits of an incumbent President when you’re not even able to win your own base, but I can’t examine the poll, so maybe there’s a logical explanation for it.
Maybe this is an outlier, but with nothing to confirm the numbers, and as far as I know, no other head-to-head polls showing anything similar, I wouldn’t get too excited about this until more data is available.
